Garage Security Alarm System: Security Tips For Your Garage Door

Burglaries today are on the rise and more and more families are looking for ways that they can protect their homes and properties. When it comes to burglaries, most thieves enter through one of your doors or windows, so it is important to make sure that these areas are very secure. Making sure all of your doors have dead bolts and your windows have working lock mechanisms is a great place to start. Additionally, you may want to put in a home security system and some even opt to have motion sensors and video surveillance monitors. Adequate outdoor lighting is also important.

One area many homeowners forget about when it comes to securing their home is their garage. In many homes the garage is actually the most vulnerable area. If you are serious about protecting your home you will especially want to make sure you garage is secure.

Checking Your Garage Door

While many people think that their automatic garage door is secure, they in many cases are incorrect in this thinking. Older models are particularly vulnerable and if you have a dated model it may be worth the thought of upgrading or at least checking its functionality.

Your garage door should be free of metal corrosion and all mechanism should be in good working order. Additionally, you should check to make sure that the frame is sturdy especially if your door is made from wood.

You will also need to check out your automatic door opener. Older models are not always secure and you may want to consider upgrading to a newer model with up to date burglar proof technology.

Consider Installing A Garage Door Alarm

Most home security systems do not cover the garage area. With your garage being a vulnerable entry point it may be in your best interest to look into having a security alarm installed for your garage door. A security alarm for your garage door is fairly inexpensive, simple to install and can give you peace of mind.

Magnetic sensor alarms are good options when it comes to securing your garage door. They operate by using a magnetic sensor, a switch, relay and a power source. Magnetic alarm sensors can be either open or closed. Open systems tend to be less secure as they are easy for some savvy burglars to bypass. Closed systems are usually a better option. The system works by monitoring the magnetic field and when the field is broken your alarm will activate.

Installation is fairly simple with the magnetic device being installed alongside the door frame and the switch being installed right on the door, so that the field connects when the door is closed. A control box with its own power source is then installed to monitor the alarm. A keypad is used and if you accidentally set off the alarm you will just need to key in the code to shut it off.

Is A Magnetic Alarm Enough Protection

While many people stick with just a magnetic door alarm, others decide to add even more security to their garage area by means of motion sensors. Although additional security is not always necessary if live in a high crime area you may want to consider it.
